Hey Yo Gurl: Anti-Street Harassment Week

Street Harassment: any action or comment between strangers in public places that is disrespectful, unwelcome, threatening and/or harassing and is motivated by gender or sexual orientation. [Stop Street Harassment]

From the stereotypical whistling as a woman walks past a construction site to groping on public transportation, street harassment takes many forms. Street harassment is one of the reasons women are encouraged to not walk alone at night, keep to themselves on the streets, and avoid eye contact so as to not encourage unsavory comments. Once again, the burden falls on the women to protect themselves. Why must we stay out of sight, pretend we don’t hear the rude and inappropriate comment? This week, male and female activists took a stand to holla back to street harassers. I compiled a Storify of some of the amazing voices speaking out against street harassment. This week, I saw just how loud voices joined in unison for a positive cause can be.
